Jaquet Droz watch bottle for 2.5 million

The XVIII century product, a unique perfume bottle with a clock and a singing bird went under the hammer at Sotheby’s auction June 11 for a record amount of 2.53 million dollars.
At present it is the most expensive antique item by Jaquet Droz, sold at the auction. However, it is worth noting that this price is completely justified, because inside the bottle for spirits hides an incredibly complex mechanism.

The pear-shaped bottle is decorated with jewelry enamel and precious stones, and in the center there is a 12-millimeter nightingale. The bird “sings” through an intricate miniature organ, and its movements are strikingly precisely coordinated with the music.

The dial of the watch, covered in white enamel, has Roman numerals. Time is marked by golden hands that are set in motion by a gilded mechanism. The dial and the window through which you can see the nightingale are lined around the perimeter with rubies and halves of pearls. The bottle is also decorated with sixteenth-century arabesques and ornaments of the finest gold foil.

This unique piece was made in 1786 using rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds and will undoubtedly remain in value for centuries to come.
